Buqa’a Theatre Festival Announces Winners

OMDURMAN (Sudanow) - The Sudanese Play Ahjiya Electronyya (electronic tales) has won the award of the Buqa’a Theatre Festival out of 16 theatrical shows from six Arab countries.
Buqa’a is an old name for the City of Omdurman.
The play, performed by actors from the Eastern City of Kassala, was deemed the best work by the festival‘s jury, made up of theatre experts from Algeria, the U.S.A, Egypt and Sudan.
Chief Juror, Sudanese actor Abdelrahim Gorani, had announced the list of festival winners during the Festival’s closing show last Tuesday.
The play “Al-englizi al-aswad (the Black Englishman)”, written by outstanding Sudanese playwright A’adil Mohammad Khair, had clinched award of the Festival’s chairman for the best show and the award for the best script and the award for the best male actor that went to actor and musician Mahmoud Maysara al-Sarraj.
The direction award was won by the Egyptian producer A’asim Najati for the play “Qaharoani, wabayin alaihum (they oppressed me, I can see it in their faces)”. Egyptian Hadeer Abdelnasir won the award for the best actress of the Festival for her role in this play.
West Darfur’s troupe Ajaweed (peacemakers) has won the jury’s award for the play “Alqarib (the boat)”, while the Egyptian play “Fi zil al-humar (in the shadow of the donkey)” has won the award for the best music and sound effects.
This 17th version of the Buqa’a Theatre Festival, that wound up on 4 April, was characterized by special shows in areas of conflict (Darfur in particular) and in the Khartoum State prisons. Training workshops and criticism symposia were held during the festival.
Three books were published on the occasion: One about the person of the festival, Sudanese actor Alsir Mahjoub, another about the vanguard of the Sudanese theatre Maysara al-Sarraj and the third book contained the poem: al-Awda Ela Sinnar (return to Sinnar), composed by the late Sudanese poet, Dr. Mohammad Abdelhai.
The closing show was attended by Vice President Hasabu Mohammad Abdelrahman, State Minister of Culture Sayyid Haroun, Egypt’s Ambassador to Sudan, the Principal of the Egyptian Arts Academy, Dr. Ahlam Younis and Sudanese actor Ali Mahdi, founder of the Buqa’a Theatre Festival, who is also deputy chairman of the International Theatre Association.
The Buqa’a Theatre Festival is held annually on the occasion of the Worldl Theatre Day (March 27).
