Sudanese Photographer Wins Top Award In International Contest

KHARTOUM (Sudanow) – Sudanese photographer Faiz Abubakr Mohamed has been selected as Africa Region's top winner in the 2022 World Press Photo Contest.
Mohamed's awarded photo shows a female protester throwing back a tear gas canister that had been fired by security forces, during a march in Khartoum on December 30, 2021 demanding an end to military rule.
The Jury comment says "This image highlights how Sudanese youth are asserting their values of human rights and citizenship. It demonstrates the remarkable bravery and boldness of an unprotected and unarmed young woman throwing back what the military has thrown at the protesters. This symbolic image praises the determination of the youth and women across Africa who are participating in, and never giving up on, the daily fight for democracy."
Mohamed won the award in the Singles Category.
The other categories of the Contest are: Stories, Long-Term Projects and Open Format.
The annual World Press Photo Contest recognizes and celebrates the best photojournalism and documentary photography produced over the last year.
The regional winners represent Africa, Asia, Europe, North and Central America, South America, and Southeast Asia and Oceania.
They have been selected out of 64,823 entries by 4,066 photographers from 130 countries.
They are 24 photographers from 23 countries: Argentina, Australia, Canada, Colombia, Bangladesh, Brazil, Ecuador, Egypt, France, Germany, Greece, India, Indonesia, Japan, Madagascar, Mexico, the Netherlands, Nigeria, Norway, Palestine, Russia, Sudan, and Thailand.
Every regional winner of the contest receives:
- A monetary prize of €1,000
- Inclusion in the annual World Press Photo year-long worldwide exhibition
- Inclusion in the annual collectible yearbook, available in multiple languages with a worldwide distribution of more than 30,000 copies
- Publication in the online collection and a personal profile on World Press Photo's website
- Promotion on World Press Photo's platforms
- Invitation to a winners’ event
- A physical award
The global winners will be chosen from the regional winners.
Mohamed lives in Khartoum. He took part in early protests following the military coup, and then channeled his activities into photojournalism as he wants to document what he sees as an ongoing popular revolution.
