Sudan Wins Seven Medals at East Africa Karate Championship

Port Sudan (Sudanaw) – The Sudanese national karate team, participating in the East Africa Championship currently held in the Ethiopian capital, Addis Ababa, has won a total of seven medals: two gold, two silver, and three bronze. The event was graced by the presence of the Sudanese Consul at the Embassy, Mr. Awad Mirghani, and the Embassy’s Legal Advisor, Mr. Haitham Al-Dhaki, who also took part in honoring the champions.

The medal details are as follows:

Gold Medal in the juniors’ kumite, under 63 kg: Omar Khalid Sadiq.

Gold Medal in juniors’ team kata (ages 14–15): Omar Khalid Sadiq, Omar Mohamed Al-Tijani, Imad Eldin Hamad Mohamed.

Silver Medal in individual kata, ages 14–15: Imad Eldin Hamad Mohamed.

Silver Medal in senior team kata (18+): Adam Ali Adam, Asaad Al-Sir Mohamed, Alaa Eldin Hamad Mohamed.

Bronze Medal in individual kata, seniors 18+: Alaa Eldin Hamad Mohamed.

Silver Medal in individual kumite, under 75 kg, seniors 18+: Asaad Al-Sir Mohamed.

Bronze Medal in individual kumite, over 84 kg, seniors 18+: Abdullah Ishaq Ali.


Sudanese athlete Omar Khalid, competing in the 60 kg category, clinched the gold medal yesterday, Saturday, in Addis Ababa, after strong competitions, defeating five opponents to secure the victory over the Ethiopian contender.

Coach Osama Rafi, Director of the Union Academy for Karate Training, dedicated the victory to the Sudanese people, emphasizing the significance of winning gold at the East Africa Championship. He stated: “We had to achieve a victory that would bring joy to the Sudanese people during these circumstances. Our athletes and delegation are committed to elevating Sudan’s name high.”

Rafi also extended his gratitude to the Federal Ministry of Youth and Sports, the Sudanese Olympic Committee, and the Sudanese Karate Federation for their efforts in facilitating the delegation, led by Dr. Sami Gadallah and Coach Anwar Al-Tijani. He highlighted the support received from the Governor of River Nile State, which contributed to this achievement.

It is noteworthy that the championship, which includes three athletes in different weight categories, will continue until December 23.
