Seventieth Anniversary of Independence

Seventieth Anniversary of Independence

Khartoum (Sudanow Magazine) Mr. President, I propose the following: that we submit a letter to His Excellency the Governor-General with the following text: "We, the members of the House of Representatives in Parliament, assembled, declare in the name of the people of Sudan that Sudan has become a fully sovereign and independent state."

With these concise words spoken by Representative Abdul Rahman Mohamed Ibrahim Dabka, representative of the Baqara Nyala West constituency, seventy years ago, Sudan was able to end more than fifty-five years of British and Egyptian colonialism.

These days mark the anniversary of the declaration of independence, and the country is going through a difficult period, facing military invasion by several countries united by their greed for the abundant resources with which Allah has blessed Sudan. These countries have disregarded the sanctity of neighborliness, kinship ties, and even the bonds of faith. They have forgotten all of this and have worked with all their might to support rebel militias to achieve their malicious goals.

But without a doubt, the Sudanese people are united now, as they have always been, in all their diversity, to declare the failure of the neo-colonialists in their endeavors, and that Sudan will forever remain free and independent. Sudan is a nation as old as human history itself, and ancient civilizations have flourished on its land for over six thousand years.

And as has been said before: this flag will continue to fly high for all time, an expression of a nation's pride and a symbol of a people's resolve.
