Alexandria (Sudanow Magazine) – Amidst a large gathering of participants at the Middle East and North Africa Hematology Conference 2026, hosted by Alexandria from April 8-10, 2026, and in the presence of the conference president, Professor Tamer Hassan, and Professor Ahmed Tarawa, President of the Middle East and North Africa Conference on Developments in Hematology, Research, and Innovation,

Professor Maria Mohamed Hamad Sati, Professor of Pathology at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Khartoum, and former Director of the National Blood Transfusion Services, was honored with the Achievement Award at this prestigious scientific conference, in the presence of distinguished academics.

Dr. Essam El-Din Hassan Ali, Director of the National Blood Transfusion Services, expressed, on behalf of himself and the staff of the National Blood Transfusion Services, their pride in Professor Maria Mohamed Hamad Sati for receiving the Achievement Award, considering this recognition a culmination of her scientific and research career in service to Sudan and its people.
Dr. Essam El-Din Hassan affirmed that the honor was well-deserved and represents a new addition to the record of Sudanese scientists and academics who have made significant contributions to global scientific research, garnering prestigious international awards across various fields and raising Sudan's profile on the international stage.
Meanwhile, Mr. Yasser Mohamed Al-Hassan, an administrator at the Faculty of Medicine and Pharmacy, University of Khartoum, explained that this recognition honors her scientific and professional career and reflects her significant contributions to the field of hematology and her esteemed position within the medical community.
Mr. Yasser added that she is a woman of immense stature, a true humanitarian in every sense of the word. Before being a doctor, she was a beloved mother and friend, always smiling and appreciative of her students and colleagues.

It is important to point out that Professor Maria Mohamed Hamad Sati is a Professor of Pathology at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Khartoum, and a consultant hematologist. She is considered one of the most prominent medical figures in Sudan in the field of hematology and blood transfusion. She served as a consultant at Soba University Hospital from 1982 to 2020.
Professor Maria was not an exception, either within her immediate or extended family. She grew up in a family of scholars and scientists. Her father, Professor Mohamed Hamad Sati, is unanimously considered by all sources to be the founder of scientific research in Sudan, and her family established a research foundation bearing his name.

Her husband is Professor Al-Tayeb Al-Asha, a professor at the University of Khartoum specializing in hematology. Her sister, Dr. Juwairiya Sati, is also a professor of biochemistry at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Khartoum. Her husband, Professor Ahmed Hassan Al-Jak, was the first dean of the School of Administrative Sciences at the University of Khartoum and has authored numerous publications. Dr. Siema Al-Jak is following in her footsteps with confidence, and much is expected of her in the future.
It is worth mentioning that Professor Maria has contributed to the development of medical and educational services. She has been a member of the Clinical Doctorate in Pathology program council since 1990 and the founder and director of the Sudanese Hemophilia Program (2003–2025).
She also served as Director of the National Blood Transfusion Services (2014–2024), leading its development and the establishment of a reference laboratory for diagnosing bleeding disorders.

She has made significant contributions to training and scientific research, published studies on hematology and endemic diseases, and helped prepare generations of hematologists in Sudan.
Certainly Dr. Maria Sati represents a shining example of Sudanese women in the fields of science and medicine; a woman who did not merely pursue a professional career, but rather established her name through knowledge, discipline, specialized work, and contributions to a medical field that demands precision, commitment, and humanity. In this sense, her life story is an inspiration as the story of a Sudanese woman who made science a path to service, impact, and excellence.

She sat quietly in the courtyard, a small book in her hands whose letters she could not decipher, her heart carrying a s...
