Khartoum (Sudanow) — The Federal Committee for Traditional and Complementary Medicine has announced the official adoption and unification of the term “Traditional and Complementary Medicine” during its tenth meeting, which marked the conclusion of the preparatory phase. The meeting was chaired by Professor Police Lieutenant General Ahmed Awad Al-Jamal, in the presence of Deputy Chairman Dr. Najm Al-Din Al-Majzoub, Committee Rapporteur Dr. Hala Musa, and committee members.

The committee chairman praised the significant efforts made by members during the previous period, noting that the series of meetings resulted in several important achievements. These included the adoption of a unified terminology for traditional and complementary medicine, approval of a five-year strategic plan for the sector, endorsement of a state-level implementation plan beginning with Khartoum State as a model, and the development of a framework to integrate traditional and complementary medicine policies into primary healthcare services.

The meeting also issued several important recommendations in coordination with the Medical and Health Professions Council, focusing on regulating and legalizing the practice of traditional and complementary medicine and establishing professional and legal frameworks to support and organize the sector.

Participants emphasized the vital role played by the Medicinal and Aromatic Plants Research Institute under the umbrella of the National Center for Research, particularly in the classification, archiving, and development of medicinal and aromatic plants research. The institute is also expected to begin publishing updated atlases of medicinal and aromatic plants for Sudanese states, an initiative that would support local pharmaceutical manufacturing based on plant-derived resources.

For his part, Dr. Najm Al-Din Al-Majzoub stressed the importance of continuing the committee’s work in preparation for the next phase, which will witness the convening of the Higher Council for Traditional and Complementary Medicine, with the aim of scientifically and systematically integrating the sector into the national healthcare system.

It is worth noting that the Federal Committee for Traditional and Complementary Medicine was established under Administrative Decree No. (8) of 2025, issued by the Undersecretary and Acting Minister of the Federal Ministry of Health, Dr. Haitham Mohamed Ibrahim.

The committee’s responsibilities include establishing specialized departments for traditional and complementary medicine in the states, conducting comprehensive surveys of practitioners, herbal shops, and related activities, in addition to carrying out field studies on medicinal, herbal, and aromatic plants. The committee also plans to develop atlases documenting the medicinal and botanical characteristics unique to each state.

The committee’s plans further include establishing specialized schools in the states to qualify and train practitioners in the field. Khartoum State is expected to lead this initiative due to its pioneering experience in establishing such institutions. Similar committees will also be formed at the state level to oversee implementation and coordination.

In addition, the committee intends to organize training and qualification workshops for practitioners across the states in accordance with relevant laws and regulations, while assisting state governments in integrating traditional and complementary medicine into primary healthcare systems, in line with the recommendations of the World Health Organization, which advocates for the safe and scientific utilization of traditional medicine to support national healthcare systems.
