In the Presence of God: The Passing of Singer Magzoub Onsa

By: Rogia al-Shafee

Khartoum (Sudanow) — In a sorrowful procession, the Sudanese people mourn the loss of singer Magzoub Onsa, who passed away following a tragic traffic accident.

Throughout the war period, the deceased remained actively involved in cultural programs and national celebrations organized by Khartoum State. He never once declined invitations to participate in events welcoming citizens returning to their homeland.

The late Singer was one of the distinguished musical voices who enriched the Sudanese artistic scene with his creativity and long-standing contributions, leaving a lasting imprint on the hearts of his audience and admirers through works marked by beauty and authenticity.

Magzoub Onsa was not merely a singer; he was a pure Sudanese voice that carried the joys and sorrows of the people and lived in their collective memory for decades. Today, his physical presence is gone following the tragic road accident on the Khartoum–Atbara highway, yet the voice that once filled homes, streets, and markets remains alive, defying absence.

He was one of the voices that carried Sudanese song from local boundaries into wide popular reach. His name became associated with a golden era in Sudanese music, during which he built his artistic standing through a warm voice and sincere performance that reached people’s hearts without pretension.

Born in Shendi in 1954, Magzoub Onsa grew up with exceptional talent that opened the doors of Sudanese Radio and National Television for him, making him one of the most prominent voices that helped shape modern Sudanese music. He possessed a warm vocal quality and a distinctive style that made him close to people, singing of love, longing, and home in a language that spoke directly to the heart.

From “Helm Al-Saba” to “Ezzayik Inti,” from “Ma Salamak” to “Akhir Khabar,” and from “Sayyad Al-Nujoom” to “Masabeeh Al-Kalam,” Onsa built a musical legacy that spanned generations. His patriotic masterpiece “Azeez Anta Ya Watani” stood as a lasting declaration of love for Sudan and a message of loyalty to a homeland that remained ever-present in his heart, just as he remained present in the hearts of his people.

He was a son of the golden era of Sudanese song, when cassette tapes passed eagerly from hand to hand, and audiences awaited new releases as if awaiting a message from a distant beloved. During those years, he secured his place among the greats of Sudanese music, supported by genuine talent and a deeply human presence that made him beloved before becoming famous.

Today, Sudanese people recall his heartfelt lyrics:

“You who left and stayed away for so long,

Never asking about us…

You who were once so close to me…

Where am I, and where are you?”

It is as if these words are now being spoken by his fans as they face the news of his departure in disbelief. The absence has become final; there will be no more calls, no upcoming concerts, no new songs awaiting release.

Magzoub Onsa did not sing only for the beloved, but for humanity itself — for longing, nostalgia, and sorrow. Today, his words seem transformed into a message of loyalty from his audience to him, and a shared grief over the departure of an artist who remained for decades part of the Sudanese emotional landscape, planting joy in hearts and leaving an indelible mark.

He departs, but true art does not die. Songs remain witnesses to an era of beauty, and memories live on in the hearts of those who loved his art.

With his passing, Sudan loses one of its authentic artistic figures. Yet his works remain a testament to a sincere talent and a rare artistic journey that combined simplicity with depth, art with meaning.

May Allah grant him vast mercy, admit him into Paradise, and grant his family and loved ones patience and comfort.
