Sudanese Surgeon Receives Prestigious SAMA Award

Khartoum – The Sudanese American Medical Association (SAMA) has selected Professor Dr. Muhieldin Ahmad, Chief of Pediatric Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgery at BC Children’s Hospital in Vancouver, Canada, as the recipient of the 2026 Dr. Isam Osman Award for Outstanding Surgeon.

In its announcement, SAMA described Dr. Muhieldin A. as a leader in his field whose career reflects the highest standards of clinical excellence, academic achievement, and humanitarian service. Trained at internationally renowned institutions including McGill University, Cleveland Clinic, the University of Zurich, and Mayo Clinic, he has consistently used his expertise to support the advancement of healthcare in Sudan.

Between 2005 and 2011, while working at the Sudan Heart Institute, Dr. Muhieldin played a key role in training and mentoring Sudanese surgeons, many of whom have gone on to become leaders in cardiovascular surgery. Through the Canada2Sudan pediatric cardiac surgery missions, he has also helped strengthen local capacity by training surgeons, critical care specialists, and nurses.

His last medical mission to Sudan took place shortly before the outbreak of war in 2023, during which his team successfully performed 144 pediatric cardiac surgeries and procedures. Since then, he has continued his humanitarian efforts by supporting conflict-affected healthcare facilities with essential medicines, medical equipment, and logistical assistance.

SAMA stated that “Dr. Muhieldin embodies the values this award represents: surgical excellence, academic integrity, humanitarian service, and an unwavering commitment to advancing the future of medicine in Sudan.”

The award is named in honor of the late Dr. Isam Osman, a distinguished Sudanese vascular surgeon and humanitarian leader. Dr. Muhieldin will receive the award at the SAMA Annual Summit in Cairo.

An award named after a great surgeon could not be more fittingly bestowed than on another surgeon whose dedication, leadership, and service have profoundly impacted the lives of children and families in Sudan and beyond.
