Fundamentals of Mental Health

In a study on mental health prepared by Prof. Muadh Sharafi, a specialist in psychology, sociology, and education, he explained that mental health is not merely the absence of mental disorders or psychological illnesses. Rather, it is a state of well-being and emotional balance that enables individuals to recognize their abilities, cope effectively with the normal stresses of life, work productively, and contribute positively to their communities. In short, mental health is a fundamental pillar of quality of life and the ability to build healthy relationships.

Foundations and Pillars of Mental Health

Mental health is based on several essential components that ensure inner balance and psychological stability:

- Self-awareness and self-acceptance: The ability to understand one's emotions, thoughts, strengths, and weaknesses, while accepting oneself without constant self-criticism or blame.
- Psychological resilience: The capacity to adapt to crises and life changes and to recover after experiencing trauma or stress.
- Emotional regulation and stress management: Expressing emotions in healthy ways and developing effective strategies to cope with daily stress and anxiety without allowing them to dominate one's life.
- Positive social relationships: Building strong and healthy connections with family, friends, and the broader community, as social support serves as an essential safety net.
- Purpose and productivity: Having a sense of meaning and value in life, along with the ability to contribute, work, and continue learning, all of which strengthen self-esteem.

Prof. Sharafi emphasized that mental health is a dynamic balance. It does not mean the complete absence of sadness or anger; rather, it reflects the ability to experience these emotions and recover from them with resilience, without allowing them to disrupt daily life.

Major Causes of Mental Health Disorders

Prof. Sharafi added that mental health disorders usually do not result from a single direct cause. Instead, they arise from a complex interaction of multiple factors that influence individuals throughout their lives.

These causes can be grouped into three main categories:

1. Biological and Genetic Factors

- Genetics and family history: Heredity plays a significant role. Having a family history of mental disorders, such as depression or schizophrenia, increases the likelihood of developing similar conditions.
- Brain chemistry: Imbalances in neurotransmitters—chemical messengers in the brain such as serotonin and dopamine that transmit signals between nerve cells—can directly affect mood and behavior.
- Brain injuries or congenital abnormalities: Severe head injuries or impaired brain development before birth, for example due to maternal smoking or substance use during pregnancy, may increase the risk of mental disorders.

2. Environmental Factors and Life Experiences

- Psychological trauma: Exposure to physical, emotional, or sexual abuse, especially during childhood, can have long-lasting psychological effects that extend into adulthood.
- Chronic stress and insecurity: Living under unstable conditions, such as war, displacement, severe poverty, or prolonged economic crises.
- Loss and social conflicts: The death of a loved one, separation, severe social isolation, loneliness, or persistent family conflicts can all contribute to mental health difficulties.

3. Psychological and Behavioral Factors

- Negative thinking patterns: Such as persistent pessimism, excessive self-blame, or difficulty coping with frustration and failure.
- Poor coping skills: Inability to manage everyday stress effectively or the absence of a supportive social network that helps individuals overcome crises.

An Important Observation

The presence of one or more risk factors does not necessarily mean that a person will develop a mental disorder. Psychological resilience, strong social support, and early intervention are all protective factors that play a crucial role in maintaining mental well-being and reducing the severity of mental health disorders.
