The Abdulla Tayeb Hall Rises Out of the Ashes Anew

Like the ancient phoenix myth, taught to hundreds of its graduates within this Hall 102, the graduates are enacting it once again, in real life, in action, and contribution.
The Sudanow magazine (https://sudanow-magazine.net/page.php?subId=31&Id=1686) has earlier written about the devastation that hit the famous 102 (one-o-two) Hall, the beating heart of the faculty of arts, at the hand of barbaric militias, an orchestrated action is now being taken by graduate to pump life into the Hall 102, now renamed after the outstanding and iconic scholar and man of letter, Professor Abdulla Tayeb.
The militias went through it, destroying and burning to ashes the hall and rendering it, gutted heap of concrete, and steel. This is part of a cultural war of attrition. This was a hall that contained no gold or money, not even famous tableaux that could be sold, not even fancy chairs that could be sold. But it is a memory of the nation. It is the place where most of the outstanding work of arts and culture have either been inaugurated or reviewed. It is the embodiment of the cultural incubation for the nation.
But the alumni, graduates and benevolent, lovers and custodians of the Sudanese cultural heritage have come together, led by the deans and lecturers at the University of Khartoum, faculty of arts, to revive this edifice and breathe life in it once again. Revival of a nation and rehabilitation of its gutted assets start with the rehabilitation and empowerment of culture. The word was first and no place could embody this saying than the Abdulla Tayeb Hall.
These various quarters and stakeholders have formed a committee which issued an appeal to the university's alumni and other generous Sudanese citizens to help rehabilitate one of the university's oldest and most renowned lecture halls.
The appeal is addressed to: all distinguished graduates of the Faculty of Arts, alumni of the Faculties of Economics and Law, business leaders, and all people of goodwill” to contribute in the rehabilitation of the Hall, the Professor Abdullah Al-Tayeb Hall
As it is today the hall has sustained extensive damage as a result of the bombing, due to the university buildings' proximity to the epicenter of the war, resulting in total destruction, within in the hall, its entry and façade.
The committee added that the hall, formerly known as Hall 102, has been, for decades, a platform for lectures, scientific seminars, and graduation ceremonies. It has witnessed various forms of scholarly activity that have contributed to the dissemination of knowledge and the preparation of generations of the nation's scholars and intellectuals, who were mentored within its walls by eminent scientific and academic figures.
As put by the Arabic Daily, Al Mohagig, the university graduates and members of the committee stated “We are also proud that it bears the name of Professor Abdullah Al-Tayeb, one of Sudan's leading figures and a prominent scholar of Arabic language and literature, whose reputation spread regionally and internationally, and whose scholarly and literary legacy remains deeply ingrained in the nation's consciousness.”
In its appeal, the committee implored graduates of the Faculty of Arts, alumni of the Faculties of Economics and Law, all those who studied in this hall, businesspeople, charitable organizations, and philanthropists to contribute to the rehabilitation of this hall so that it may once again become a beacon of knowledge and a guiding light on the path of learning, as it once was.
The committee noted that prior to launching the appeal, a graduate of the Faculty of Arts, Class of 2009, had already taken the initiative. Hajir, the daughter of businessman and philanthropist Mohamed Saleh Idris, donated $25,000 as a charitable endowment in the name of their late mother, Asia Al-Hassan. The family also committed to contributing to the hall's regular maintenance, thus laying a solid foundation for the project, which has an estimated total cost of $64,000.
The hall's reconstruction committee has created a Facebook page called "Faculty of Arts Reconstruction Initiative – University of Khartoum. مبادرة إعمار كلية الآداب – جامعة الخرطوم " Those wishing to contribute or inquire about how to support the project are invited to visit the page and contact the Professor Abdullah Al-Tayeb Hall Rehabilitation Committee.
