The Advantages of Sudanese-Sudanese Dialogue

The Advantages of Sudanese-Sudanese Dialogue

By: Rogia al-Shafee

Khartoum (Sudanow) — At critical moments, only the voice of reason can save Sudan.

Comprehensive Sudanese dialogue is the bridge from crisis to stability. It is a space where we come together despite our differences to forge an agreement that preserves lives, protects the land, and restores the dignity and standing of the nation.

To discuss the importance of Sudanese dialogue, Sudanow spoke with Professor Muath Sharafi, a specialist in psychology, sociology, and education, who said:

Sudanese-Sudanese dialogue represents a lifeline and the most important option for achieving stability and social peace, particularly amid crises and complex political and social transformations.

At its core, Sudanese-Sudanese dialogue means bringing together all segments of Sudanese society—including political forces, traditional administrations, resistance committees, civil society, religious leaders, and intellectuals—around one table to discuss national issues openly and transparently, without external tutelage.

The Importance and Advantages of Sudanese-Sudanese Dialogue

1. Ownership of the Decision and National Sovereignty

One of the most significant advantages of internal dialogue is that it produces solutions rooted in a deep understanding of Sudan's realities and its cultural and social diversity.

When Sudanese people manage their own affairs, they preserve national decision-making sovereignty and distance themselves from the agendas of external alliances and ready-made solutions that may not suit the Sudanese context.

2. Building Trust and Restoring the Social Fabric

Successive crises and conflicts have created polarization, estrangement, and mistrust among different components of society.

Direct dialogue provides an opportunity to break down barriers of isolation and suspicion and replace hate speech with mutual listening, paving the way for comprehensive national reconciliation and the restoration of the social fabric.

3. Reaching Consensus on Strategic Issues

Dialogue provides an inclusive platform for addressing fundamental issues over which disagreements have persisted for years, including:

The form of government and equal citizenship without discrimination.

Managing diversity and ensuring the fair distribution of wealth and power.

Institutional reform and the development of a stable economic and security vision.

4. Sustainability and Legitimacy

Agreements built through broad national and popular consensus tend to enjoy a higher degree of stability and public acceptance than agreements imposed bilaterally or under external pressure, which remain vulnerable to collapse at the first major crisis.

5. Ending Conflicts and Alleviating Suffering

Sitting at the negotiating table is the most mature path toward stopping bloodshed, reducing displacement and forced migration, and redirecting the state's efforts and the energies of young people toward development and reconstruction rather than conflict.

Requirements for Successful Dialogue

Inclusiveness: No one should be excluded except those against whom judicial convictions have been issued for crimes against humanity.

Transparency and sincerity: The supreme national interest must take precedence over narrow partisan or regional interests.

National will: The desire for change must stem from a firm belief that there can be neither victor nor vanquished within one homeland, and that the Sudan of the future must have room for everyone.

Relying on Sudanese-Sudanese dialogue is not merely a political option; rather, it is the civilized—and only—way forward toward establishing a stable civilian state founded on citizenship, equitable distribution, and balanced development.
