Falcons of Jediane write in New Era for Sudanese Football with CECAFA Cup Victory

Khartoum (Sudanow Magazine) – The Sudanese U-20 national team clinched the CECAFA U-20 Championship title after defeating Tanzania 4-3 on penalties in the final held Thursday afternoon in Dar es Salaam.
The match ended goalless in regulation time. Sudan took the lead in extra time with a header from Omar Hamed, before Tanzania equalized to force a penalty shootout, where Sudan emerged victorious.
This triumph capped a heroic journey, highlighted by qualification for the 2027 Africa U-20 Cup of Nations. The CECAFA title further confirms the emergence of a new generation of Sudanese footballers.
The achievement is all the more significant given the exceptional circumstances: a team without a regular league, without proper training facilities, and with players scattered between displacement camps and the diaspora. Yet they played with unwavering determination, fighting for every ball as if it were their last and turning the impossible into possible.
Following the final whistle, the entire nation poured into the streets — from Omdurman, still recovering from war, to Port Sudan, Kassala, Gedaref, Atbara, Merowe, Wad Madani, and even displacement camps — chanting in unison: "Up! Up! Sudan is on top!" in a scene that united what politics had divided.

Prime Minister Professor Kamil Idris congratulated the team, praising its exceptional performance and spirit of determination and unity. He stressed that the achievement reflects the resolve of Sudanese youth and their ability to raise the national flag high in regional and continental competitions.
Minister of Youth and Sports Professor Ahmed Adam Ahmed, Undersecretary Dr. Sumaya Abdel-Muttalib, and Director of Sports Abdel-Rahim Al-Hafyan also congratulated the team, commending its honorable performance and fighting spirit. They affirmed that the title is a significant addition to Sudanese football history and extended congratulations to the country's leadership, the sporting public, the Football Association, and the technical, administrative, and medical staff.
Observers believe this generation should be treated as a state project, not merely a federation project — through proper material and moral recognition, a long-term preparatory camp in international academies, and keeping the squad intact as the nucleus of the senior team. The victory is also a major morale boost for the senior Falcons of Jediane ahead of their crucial match against Ethiopia in Juba, a city that embraced Sudan with love.
