Sudan Launches $87 Million BOOST Project to Strengthen Agricultural Resilience
27 September, 2026
KHARTOUM, Sudan — Sudan has launched a US$87 million initiative to strengthen the country’s agricultural and food systems and support farming communities affected by conflict, climate shocks and economic pressures.
The BOOST – Boosting Agrifood Systems Resilience in Sudan project, funded by the African Development Bank (AfDB), was launched by Sudan’s Minister of Finance, the Under Secretary of the Ministry of Agriculture, and representatives of the Ministry of Social Welfare, African Development Bank, CIMMYT, World Food Programme, UN Women and other senior Sudanese government units and the international community in Sudan.
Implemented by the World Food Programme (WFP) in partnership with technical partners, the project aims to restore agricultural production, improve farmers’ access to agricultural inputs and markets, reduce post-harvest losses and strengthen the capacity and resilience of smallholder farmers.
For Sudan, where millions of people depend on agriculture for their livelihoods and food security, strengthening local production is an important part of rebuilding food systems affected by the ongoing crisis.

The International Maize and Wheat Improvement Centre (CIMMYT) is providing technical and agricultural expertise to the BOOST project, focusing on agricultural research, improved seed systems, crop productivity, climate-resilient agriculture, and sustainable farming practices.
“Through the BOOST project, CIMMYT is supporting Sudan’s efforts to rebuild resilient and sustainable food systems. By strengthening seed systems, promoting climate-resilient farming practices, improving agricultural productivity, and helping farmers access markets, we are working to ensure that agricultural research and innovation translate into practical solutions that benefit smallholder farmers and strengthen local food production,” said Dr Murtada Khalid, CIMMYT’s Country Director in Sudan.
CIMMYT’s technical role complements WFP’s humanitarian and implementation expertise. The collaboration aims to translate agricultural research and technical knowledge into practical interventions that benefit farming communities.
The project will focus on strengthening farmers’ access to the resources and knowledge they need to resume and improve production, while supporting more resilient agricultural systems that can respond to climate-related and economic challenges.
For CIMMYT, participation in BOOST represents an opportunity to contribute its experience in crop improvement, seed systems, agricultural research and climate-resilient farming to Sudan’s efforts to rebuild its agricultural sector.
The launch of the US$87 million project brings together government, humanitarian, development and technical partners around a shared objective: supporting Sudanese farmers to restore production, strengthen livelihoods and contribute to more resilient food systems.
