Moscow (Sudanow) — The Russian State University for the Humanities in Moscow has awarded Sudan’s Transitional Sovereignty Council Chairman and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, General Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan, an honorary doctorate in recognition of his efforts to strengthen Sudanese-Russian relations and promote cooperation between the two countries in the cultural, educational, scientific and humanitarian fields.
The award ceremony took place during Al-Burhan’s visit to Moscow to participate in the Third Russia-Africa Summit. The event was attended by Russia’s Deputy Minister of Education and Science, the university’s rector, Russia’s Ambassador to Sudan, Andrey Chernovol, as well as academics, students and members of the Sudanese community in the Russian Federation.
Addressing the ceremony, Al-Burhan said the honorary doctorate was an honour for the Sudanese people as a whole. He reaffirmed Sudan’s commitment to expanding cooperation with Russia and strengthening partnerships between educational, scientific and cultural institutions in both countries. He also commended the role of the Sudanese community in Russia, emphasising the importance of harnessing the expertise and capabilities of Sudanese nationals abroad to support the country's reconstruction and development efforts.
The university's rector stated that the honorary degree had been approved by the institution's Academic Council. Russian representatives, meanwhile, expressed their interest in expanding academic, cultural and humanitarian cooperation with Sudan.
The Russian State University for the Humanities traces its origins to the Moscow State Institute of History and Archives, established in 1930. The university was established in its present form in 1991 and specialises in the study and research of the humanities and social sciences, including history, languages, culture and social studies.
Commenting on the significance of the award, consumer affairs expert Dr. Haitham Hassan Abdel Salam said that the honorary doctorate conferred on Al-Burhan goes beyond its academic and ceremonial dimensions, reflecting broader political and cultural aspects of relations between Khartoum and Moscow.
Abdel Salam noted that closer Sudanese-Russian ties could create opportunities to expand partnerships in education, scientific research and academic exchange, alongside economic, industrial and technological cooperation. Such partnerships, he argued, could contribute to Sudan's development and reconstruction efforts amid the exceptional circumstances facing the country.
He also highlighted the importance of diversifying Sudan's international relations and pursuing partnerships based on mutual interests, while safeguarding national sovereignty and strategic interests.
The ceremony concluded with a cultural programme featuring performances by students from several Moscow schools, alongside presentations by military bands. A short documentary film was also screened, highlighting key milestones in Sudanese-Russian relations over the past seven decades.
The award comes amid ongoing efforts by Sudan and Russia to broaden their areas of cooperation. Translating these longstanding ties into practical projects and agreements in education, the economy and scientific research remains one of the key indicators of the future direction of the bilateral partnership.
