KHARTOUM (Sudanow) - Sudanese gastroenterologist and hepatologist Ahmed Hashim al-Sir was named to deliver the Royal College of Physicians (RCP) quincentennial lecture for the London and South East region.
The lecture was delivered last April within the extensive programme of events and festivities being organized by the RCP of London, the oldest medical college in England, to celebrate its 500-year anniversary throughout 2018.
Dr. Ahmed highlighted in the lecture last April the success of his dedicated hostel-based liver service for homeless and vulnerable people: the Vulnerable Adults Liver Disease (VALID) study.
The study was conducted in Brighton which has one of the highest homelessness rates in Britain.
Dr. Ahmed and his team have received a lot of recognition and commendation for running this healthcare model. They achieved finalist status at the Sustainable Healthcare Awards 2016, organised by the King's Fund. He was also shortlisted for the patient-centred care category of the Royal College of Physicians awards 2017.
The study was also commended by the British Association for the Study of the Liver, twice in 2016 and 2017, and received a prize from the Royal Society of Medicine last year.
Dr. Ahmed has almost finalised a proposal for setting up the first community-based liver service for people at high risk in the suburbs of Khartoum, Sudan.
Dr. Ahmed is a gastroenterology and hepatology trainee at Brighton and Sussex University Hospitals, Heptalogy Clinical Research fellow at University of Sussex.
