Eritrea and Sudan agree to reopen borders and allow free movement

Khartoum, Sudan (Sudanow)- Sudan and Eritrea have agreed to re-open the common borders for free movement of people and goods, with Eritrean President Asias Afwerki, stressing that no one should intervene into Sudan’s domestic affairs and how they are to be resolved.
Sudanese Transitional Military Council President, lieutenant General Abdul Fatah Al Burhan, on Friday paid a one day state visit to Asmara, Eritrea, where he conferred with President Afwerki, bilateral relations and current developments in Khartoum.
The two sides have agreed to open up the common border and to facilitate the movement of people and goods, leaving the technical matters to the competent officials in the two countries, but they stressed the reopening should take place immediately, a spokesperson for the Ministry for Foreign Affairs said Friday.
The two sides, the ministry added, are also agreed to invigorate the cooperation and coordination agreement between the two countries in all fields
The Sudanese official has during the meeting briefed President Afwerki on the latest development in the Sudan, the Head of the African Affairs Department at the Ministry for Foreign Affairs, Abdul Moneim Osman, said in statements following the return of Al Burhan to Khartoum, Friday.
He said President Afwerki has on his side stressed that Eritrea fully supports the Sudanese people and rejects any meddling into Sudan’s internal affairs.
“The Sudanese people should alone decide their fate by themselves” president Afwerki was quoted as saying during the meeting with Al Burhan.
The borders were closed during the rule of the ousted President Omar Bashir who charged that huge movements of troops were reported on the other sides of the common borders with Eritrea.
The government then ordered the closure of the border on the ground of frustrating any infiltration into Sudan national territories. It also charged that unruly element and human trafficking activities were taking place via these borders.
