14 May, 2013By: Mohammed Osman
Khartoum, (Sudanow) - Ambassador Tomas Ulicny, Head of Delegation of the European Union to Sudan addressed a reception of 500 guests who attended the occasion of Europe Day, the launching of the Sudanese European Friendship Association and the Sudanese European Parliamentary Group.
The following speech was delivered by Ambassador Tomas Ulicny:
It is an honour to welcome you all here tonight on the occasion of Europe Day.
I am particularly pleased to welcome Dr. Mohamed Hasan Al Amin, Chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee at the National Assembly, who is our guest of honour this evening. I also welcome Mr. Gamal El-Wali who as of today officially assumes the position as Chairman of the European Sudanese Friendship Association. Under the mentorship of the Speaker, he is also the initiator of the Sudanese-European Parliamentary Friendship Group. Both ventures have been underway for more than one year and I am proud to celebrate their official launch tonight in your presence.
The European Union often presents itself under the slogan "united in diversity".
When travelling in Sudan it often strikes me how, in a single country, a similar diversity prevails. An impressive number of languages, cultures and customs are united within new borders. From Chad in the West to Eritrea and Ethiopia in the East – from Egypt and Libya in the North to the Central African Republic and South Sudan in the South – Sudan has seven neighbouring countries, which predestines it for a central role in the region.
