Japan Contributes 13Million USD In Assistance To Water Improvement Projects In Sudan

Khartoum, (Sudanow) - The Government of Japan has decided to extend a grant assistanceof 1.086 billion yen (approximately US$ 13 million) for urgent improvement of water supply facilities in Kassala, a press release by the Japanese embassy in Khartoum said Wednesday.
It pointed out that this was the first bilateral grant assistance extended by the Government of Japan to north Sudan since early 1990s. This grant, together with Japan International Cooperation Agency’s capacity building project for Kassala State Government, is Japan’s concrete action to support the strong initiative of the Government of the Sudan and its pledge of US$1.5 billion for projects in East Sudan, which was expressed atthe International Donors and Investors Conference in Kuwait last December.
The Notes on this grant were signed and exchanged today at the Ministry of International Cooperation between H.E. Mr. Akinori Wada, Ambassador of Japan to the Sudan and H.E. Dr. Jalal Yousif Eldigair, Minister of International Cooperationofthe Government ofthe Sudan, attended by Resident Representative of Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).
This contribution will support rehabilitation of two water treatment plants in Kassala, including receiving well, reservoirs, distribution pump. Further to this assistance, the Government of Japan has been supporting capacity development of water sector in Sudan. JICA launched Human Resource Development for Water Supply in 2006 and its first phase has just completed. The second phase will start mid this year. Another capacity development project for provision of services for basic human needs is under preparatory study and to be launched this year in Kassala.
“Though Japan is under huge reconstructionout of the devastating earthquake that hit northeastern part of the nation, the Government of Japan continues to assist other countries with development needs.” Ambassador Wada said at the signing ceremony today.
The Government of Japan strongly hopes that these contributions will support development of Kassla and its economy and society. The Government of Japan believes that this project will accelerate recovery and reconstruction in east Sudan. This grant is a part of Japan’s assistance for consolidation of peace in Sudan, which amounts over 580 million US dollars to date since 2005.
