The Sudanese Red Crescent Society assumes a leading role in provision of humanitarian assistance in south Kordufan State

Khartoum, 4- 8 (SUNA)- The Sudanese Red Crescent Society has responded to the emergency humanitarian needs spurred by the fighting that brook in South Kordufan region , June this year, an official at the Red Crescent Society said.
He pointed out that the Sudanese Red Crescent Society being present in the nineteen localities of the State of South Kordufan was thus able to play a leading role in provision of emergency humanitarian assistance to those affected population because of the developments in south Kordufan.
He said the society carried out these activities in close coordination with its partners in humanitarian action in the region, namely the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) and the National Organizations in the area, as well as the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) beside the different UN agencies and the NGOS.
H said within its activities there, the Red Crescent society evacuated the injured persons and buried the dead from both sides in conflict in South Kordufan, particularly in the regional capital of Kadugli and the surrounding areas.
The Secretary General of the Sudanese Red Crescent society, Engineer Osman Jaafar, told the Sudan News Agency that the society carried out the burial of the dead persons from both sides in accordance with the international norms and procedures followed in such situation, preserving the dignity of the dead. He said the procedures included documentation of the bodies before laying them to rest. Such activities, he explained, were carried out in the presence of the relevant authorities in south Kordufan.
The secretary General has pointed out that the society has carried out those activities in implementation of its humanitarian mandate and in response to the appeal made by the victims of the conflict in south Kordufan state.
He said those buried included 59 bodies of whom 58 were males and one was a female. He said the details show that of those killed 11 were civilians, comprising two children and one woman, while the rest of the bodies were fighters on both sides of the conflict that is 48 of them. The secretary general said out of those 59 buried bodies, 55 were decomposed.
He expressed hope that all parties in south Kordufan would help facilitate the pure humanitarian activities of the society so as to serve the most vulnerable persons there.
He stressed that the society which is an independent impartial organizations with humanitarian objectives, carry out its work independently and impartially, without any siding or discrimination against any victims or affected persons.
