AU committed to a process of national reconciliation and an inclusive transition in Libya

Khartoum, (sudanow.info.sd)-The African Union on Friday said that there was imperative need for national reconciliation among Libyans, in line with the stated commitment of the new Libyan authorities.
A statement issued by the AU a day after the death of the Libyan president , the AU said the Chairperson of the Commission of the African Union (AU), Dr. Jean Ping, has followed closely the latest developments in Libya, including the death of Colonel Muammar Qaddafi and some of his sons and senior aides, in circumstances of armed violence.
The statement pointed out to the stand of the AU since the onset of the crisis in Libya, stressing its tireless work towards a solution that meets the legitimate aspirations of the Libyan people for democracy, respect for human rights and good governance.
"Today more than ever before, there is need for the new Libyan authorities to spare no effort in ensuring that those aspirations are fulfilled. " the release said adding that " at this particular juncture, in Libya’s history, the Chairperson of the Commission reiterates AU’s conviction regarding the imperative need for national reconciliation among all Libyans, in line with the stated commitment of the new Libyan authorities, for this is a prerequisite for stability and the establishment of viable, democratic and accountable institutions."
The statement quoted the Chairperson, Dr Ping, as stressing anew the continued commitment of the AU to support the Libyan people and to work with the new authorities towards genuine national reconciliation, respect for human rights and an inclusive transition leading to the establishment of a new democratic dispensation.
The statement explained that in this respect, and in line with the decision adopted by the Peace and Security Council on 20 October 2011, the AU is taking steps for the early establishment of a Liaison Office in Tripoli to be headed by a Special Representative.
"This step, together with the effective participation of Libya in the work of the AU organs, including the PSC, will go a long way in assisting the country to step up efforts aimed at completing all actions needed to bring about lasting peace, stability, security, development and democracy to Libya." The statement said.
