KHARTOUM, (sudanow.info.sd)–Sudan on Saturday announced it has reached an agreement with the south on the thorny issue of oil transit fees, but gave no details as to how much the two sides have contented themselves with for the transportation of one barrel of oil.
The Ministry of Petroleum was Saturday quoted by the official Sudan news agency as said Juba and Khartoum delegates meeting in have reached an agreement on oil transit fees; however government official spokesman at the oil talks in Addis Ababa, said the deal falls below the expectations of the two sides.
"We have reached a final agreement with South Sudan on oil transit, and we expect on overture on other files under negotiations" The Undersecretary at the Ministry of Petroleum: Awad Abdul Fatah, told the Sudan News Agency (SUNA) on Saturday.
The Sudan government delegation to the Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, negotiations ended the last round of talks which lasted for three weeks, and returned to Khartoum early morning Saturday.
Dr Mutrif Sidiq, the Official Spokesman for the delegation of the Government of Sudan told SUNA the talks with the Republic of South Sudan delegation have covered, beside petroleum, borders and security issues, as well as the Abyei, demilitarized safe areas, refraining from provision of safe haven, military, political assistance to rebel elements operating from one state against the other.
According to Dr Mutrif, said the two sides have also dwelt on the disengagement of the Government of the Republic of South Sudan from the 9th and 10th divisions which are based in South Kordufan and the Blue Nile states, inside Sudan's national territories.
Dr Mutrif said the agreement reached on oil transit fees was ''reasonable'' however, he stressed, it was not up to par with the expectations of either side. He said the deal will be implemented at the end of the Muslim Holy Month of Ramadan and the Eid Fitr vacation.
The Sudanese press, including the independent daily Akhbar al Youm and the well-informed, al Rae Al-Am, said the south agreed to pay Sudan $25.80 as transit fees per barrel, down from the 63 Sudan was calling for and up from under one dollar the south was insisting to pay, when the talks were initiated at the beginning of the year. There is no official figure on the side of the government yet.
