KHARTGOUM, Sudan (Sudanow) – The Sudanese Army on Sunday said thirteen military men were killed in a plane crash, 40 km outside the national capital, when their plane, a Russian made antinov 12, developed an engine failure.
Army spokesman, Colonel Sawarmy Khalid, said out of the 22 military on board, only nine survived the crash while the other thirteen were immediately killed by the crash.
He was quoted by the official Sudan news agency as saying the plane which was also carrying military equipment, was heading from Khartoum to Al Fashir, capital of West Darfur State, when one of its engine developed a technical failure, prompting the pilot to ask for a forced landing, and in so doing the other engine failed and the plane crashed.
He said the plane was carrying 22 people, 16 passengers and 6 crew all of them military men, and was loaded with military equipment, when it crashed killing 13 immediately while nine other were taken to hospitals.
He said the pilot reported to the tower that his plane developed a problem in one engine and that the other was similarly developing a problem and that he was about to make forced landing and in his attempt to land, the plane crashed, 40 km west of Omdurman, the twin capital of the triangle 3-town capital of Khartoum.
