The AU welcomes the outcome of the summit meeting between the Presidents of Sudan and S. Sudan

In a press release received by Sudanow on Friday, the Chairperson of the Commission of the African Union (AU), Dr. Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma, welcomed the outcome of the Summit meeting between President Omar Al Bashir of Sudan and President Salva Kiir of the South Sudan, held in Khartoum, on 3 September 2013.
“The Chairperson of the Commission is encouraged by the steps taken by the two Presidents to conclude the Summit with positive outcomes, particularly the decision by the Government of Sudan to indefinitely suspend the shutdown of the transportation and processing of oil from South Sudan.” The press release said, adding that the chairperson has commended the two Presidents for the activation of the two Committees created to oversee the implementation of the 27 September 2012 Cooperation Agreements.
The statement said Dr Zuma also welcomed the commitment by the two Presidents to continue their engagement on all outstanding issues, particularly those relating to Abyei.
The statement quoted the Chairperson as urging all stakeholders and the citizens of both countries to continue to support their leaders in their efforts to address the outstanding challenges
Meanwhile the Sudanese President Al Bashir on Thursday briefed visiting African Union Chief Mediator Thabo Mbeki on a recent state visit to Khartoum by South Sudanese President Silva Kiir Mayardit.
Following the briefing, Mbeki told reporters here that President Bashir briefed him on the outcome of President Kiir’s visit, adding that from the briefing he had deduced that the two countries are seriously resolved to surmount the obstacles for establishing normal bilateral relations for the interest of the two peoples.
Mbeki, the Chairman of the AU High-level Implementation Panel (AUHIP), said the two countries, in the joint communiqué that was issued on Kiir’s visit, pledged to go ahead with normalizing their relations and solve the pending problems.
Mbeki said he would travel to Juba on Friday for a meeting with President Kiir for agreement on a working programme that could further enhance the relations between north and south Sudan.
