An interview on electronic Education

Question: tell us about the electronic Education project and its scope?
Dr Ayman Mohamed Badri of the Ahfad University for Girls, and Representative Babikir Badri Scientific Society for Women Studies:-
It is owned by the National council for Adult Education. It was first conceived within the 2008 Strategy as drawn by the Council of Ministers. And after preparation of the first step the first experiment was launched using mathematics and it was a great success, showing the great potentials for education of children using this programme and it also depicted the success of our children in using computers for education.
Question: what comes to mind is when has this project started and how did it start initially?
Answer: it was initiated by the Ahfad University in collaboration with a number of Sudanese universities including the Sudan University for Science and Technology, the University of Khartoum, the University of Zaeem al Azahari, the University of Gedarif, the Kenana college for technology and some other 13 university all working with each other. Of course there are there are other civil society organizations as well as the National Information Centre and the contribution of the Sudani Telecommunication company.
Question: What areas does it cover and at what stage it is now?
Answer: the project covers three villages, two in the while Nile state and one in Gedarif state. It brings together 66 participants, girls and boys, aged between 7 to 9 years. They are supervised by three facilitators working in all these villages. They helped them with getting used to the computers. The facilitators were selected upon test. After first experiment we came out with great results, including a development in the mathematical abilities of the children. This was the first stage of the project which was aimed to know the possibility of such type of education in our environment, as an alternate type of education, to enable the children receive better education. And mind you in all these activities we used the solar energy, to charge the batteries of the computers.
Question: what is the second stage of this project, if that was the first step?
Answer: we look forward to completion of the second stage of the project. Preparations are currently underway to introduce Arabic language within this curriculum and it is about to start the second experiment that will cover a whole academic year, with the view that we will by the end of the academic year, reach conclusion as to the capabilities of the children to learn using this method. Those, mind you, are children are selected by their own schools. The programme does not intend to come up with an alternate or change schools for those children, but the aim is to provide those children with a chance to learn new skill. The children were assessed by their school after completion of the first stage and some were moved to second some third class, and only a few were taken to their own classes, second grade. In fact this type of education is based on several scientific theories and on electronic education management and adult education. And we are proud about the bright results reached. This method has proven not only cost effective but equally very efficient education-wise, compared to the traditional education received in regular schools.
Question: what are the contribution of other parties in this project?
Answer: we have several partners including the National Council for Adult Education, the Ministry for General Education, the United Nations Children Fund UNICEF, and the Dutch WAR organization . we work together hand in hand to achieve this project on electronic education for children outside the regular schools. We target children under nine in the remote villages all over the country. The ultimate goal is to reach children in the remote villages and to be able to take into consideration the social and living conditions for the children.
Question: what are the stages for implementing the project?
Answer: the aim is to train children under nine, under the supervision of a facilitator, trained by the Ministry for General Education in the said state, under the overall supervision of the ministry’s coordinator. The objective is to educate children on how to use the various available electronic media. After a thorough research, the first stage was implemented. Mathematics came first, and it was carried out under the National center on curricula and educational Research. The first outcome was encouraging. So we plan for the second stage which will include Arabic language and Religious education.
We are proud to have cooperation with the various parties, including the UNESCO who provide the funding and with the Africa Electronic city in preparation and production of the material used. We were, as I have said earlier, able to lure in the assistance of the Dutch WAR and the UNICEF. And we do appreciate the role of the media in propagating this project and its promotion.
