Sudan and Ethiopia issue joint communique at the end of their summit meeting in Khartoum

KHARTOUM, (Sudanow)- Sudan and Ethiopia on Wednesday signed a dozen of agreements and memorandums of understanding ranging from close economic cooperation to security, at the end of two days of meeting of the High Level Joint Commission co-chaired by President Omar Al Bashir of Sudan and Prime Minister Haile Mariam Desalegn.
President Bashir and Desalegn have stressed in their joint press conference that African leaders will have a unified stance against the International Criminal Court (ICC) pending on the response of the Security Council on proposals tabled by a panel of African leaders to this effect.
The two sides who signed 14 agreements and memorandum of understanding as well as agreeing to establish a huge free zone area along the joint borders, half of it inside the Sudan and the other half inside Ethiopia, have stressed that their agreements were not targeted against any country in the region and that on the contrary they would be working to boost regional peace and cooperation.
“The two sides have recommitted themselves to the decision of the IGAD Assembly of Heads of State and Government to revitalize IGAD to speed up the regional integration process and express their determination to coordinate their effort to this end.” The joint communique issued at the end of the meeting stressed.
President Al Bashir has stressed in the press briefing that his country would use its good relations with both Ethiopia and Eritrea to mend the fences between Asmara and Addis Ababa while premier Desalegn has stressed that his country would continue its efforts to speed up the implementation of joint agreement Khartoum and Juba have signed recently with the view to bring peace and stability between the two countries and in the region.
“The Ethiopia side has expressed its commitment to contribute in any way possible to peace in the Sudan and south Sudan.” The joint communique stressed.
