Violence in Juba displaced thousands
18 December, 2013Khartoum, (Sudanow)- A Report by the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) in south sudan has drawn a pleak image of the situation in south sudan following three days of unrest, after authroities there said a coup attempt was foiled.
The report received by sudanow.info.sd in Khartoum said health facilities and hospitals around the city, including JubaTeaching Hospital, have reportedly admitted hundreds of patients, including “many with gunshot wounds, both civilians and military personnel”.
It explaiend that heavy armed fighting broke out in Juba on 15 December, with gunfire and shelling reported in several parts of the city. The violence persisted throughout 16 December and “caused thousands of civilians to be displaced, including an estimated 13,000 people who sought refuge at the two main bases of the UN peacekeeping mission in South Sudan (UNMISS).”
OCHA said reports indicate that civilianshave also sought refuge in other places in Juba town such as churches though ongoing fighting hindered access to those sheltering.
It explaiend that the “capacity was stretched”, as limited numbers of medical personnel struggled to cope with the arrival of patients in large numbers. Urgently needed surgical supplies were provided to the hospitals with more on their way as numbers of wounded were expected to rise as fighting continued.
As of the evening of 16 December, the ongoing insecurity across Juba was preventing aid agencies from accessing the displaced people. However, partners are mobilized to respond to needs as soon as the security situation allows.
Though exact needs have not yet been assessed, people affected by the violence are likely to require medical care, water supplies, shelter and basic household items and protection.
Outside Juba, sporadic fighting was also reported in Jonglei. In Pibor town, shooting on 16 December caused several hundred civilians to seek safety in the UNMISS base.
