IGAD leaders to hold summit meeting in Juba, President Bashir leads his country delegation
20 January, 2014By: Mohammed Osman
Khartoum, (Sudanow)- President Omar al-Beshir was on Monday briefed by his Foreign Minister Ali Ahmed Karti on preparations for a summit meeting of the Inter-governmental Authority on Development (IGAD) due to be held in Juba, capital of South Sudan, on Thursday to discuss the situation there.
Minister Karti told reporters that the extraordinary summit of the east African nations that include the Sudan would be convened following on-going attempts for reconciliation between the warring South Sudanese parties.
The summit will consider the security situation in South Sudan and will try to push forward the current Addis Ababa negotiations between the parties to the conflict and will also consider the likelihood of foreign intervention in the South, bearing in mind the UN peace-keeping forces already present there, the Sudanese Foreign Minister said.
He said his country has already taken a positive position in support of peace and stability in the South, besides its opposition to any foreign interventions in South Sudan.
The Sudan is more concerned than any other country with peace and stability in the South for security and economic reasons, he stressed.
Meanwhile Sudanese army has stressed it would never get involved militarily in South Sudan, not even for protecting the oilfields there because, according to the Spokesman of the Sudan Armed Forces (SAF), there is no agreement between the two countries for formation of a joint force for the purpose.
Spokesman Sawarmi Khalid Saad told reporters that the Sudanese armed forces would enter any country only under a protocol or an agreement with that country and any decision for deployment of troops to defend the oil-wells would be made in compliance of an agreement by Khartoum and Juba governments and by presidents Bashir and Salva Kiir, rather than a decision by the two armies.
