Nyala, Sudan (sudanow.info.sd)- A UNAMID peacekeeper was killed and a second seriously injured when their vehicle carrying five troops came under attack by four gunmen at 1040 hours today in Duma Village, 37 kilometers northeast of Nyala in South Darfur.
The United Nations African Union Mission (UNAMID) has pointed out in a statement that the Sudangovernment police transported the victims to a hospital in Nyala.
The statement said UNAMID then transported them to a Pakistan Level III hospital where the most seriously injured has undergone surgery. UNAMID military police are assessing the scene of the incident.
Government police are searching the area, the statement said, adding that the identity of the assailants has not been determined. The vehicle has been recovered.
“The attack on our peacekeepers is deplorable and our hearts go out to the families and friends of the deceased,” said the UNAMID Deputy Joint Special Representative (Political) Aichatou Mindaoudou Souleymane, the statement reported.
“UNAMID is doing all it can to render treatment to the injured, and, with the Sudanese police, to find the perpetrators and bring them to justice,”
it said thirty UNAMID personnel have died due to hostile action since UNAMID was deployed on 31 December 2007
