UNAMID chief appeals for peace in Darfur

Khartoum, Sudan (sudanow.info.sd) - Professor Ibrahim Gambari, the UNAMID Joint Special Representation (JSR) and Joint Chief Mediator, has appealed Darfur rebel movement to unite for peace not for war.
“Join the peace process and contribute to building of a better tomorrow for all Darfuris. This is not the time to posture. This is not a time to unite for war. This is a time to unite for peace”.Gambari said on Wednesday.
Professor Gambari on Wednesday briefed members of the local and international press in Khartoum on the latest developments in Darfur, as well as the peace process following the signing of the Doha Document for Peace in Darfur. He was accompanied
by Deputy JSR (Political) Aichatou Mindaoudou, Force Commander, Lt. Gen. Patrick Nyamvumba, and Police Commissioner, James Oppong-Boanuh.
The Darfur rebel movements have recently called for uniting their ranks to stand against the central government in Khartoum. On Tuesday President Omar Bashir appointed a prominent Darfur political leader as his deputy, Vice President; the first time ever a Darfur occupies this post.
However the Darfur rebel movements have belittled the movement stressing that what they wanted was how the Sudan would be governed not who would govern the Sudan.
" I reiterate my call to the Justice and Equality Movement (JEM) the Sudanese Liberation Army- Minni Minawi and the Sudanese Liberation Army – Abdul Wahid to join the peace process and contribute to building of a better tomorrow for all Darfuris. This is not the time to posture. This is not a time to unite for war. This is a time to unite for peace. Too many have suffered and too much is at stake. Entire communities are looking at you for leadership to take Darfur forward" he stressed.
Although a rebel leader of the Justice and Equality Movement JEM has said he found his way from Libya where he was held against his will, still little military activities were going on, partly because of the fragmentation of the movements and partly because of the political drive adopted by the government the last of which was the signing of the Doha peace deal, strongly supported by UNAMID.
" We believe that UNAMID has significantly stabilized the situation in Darfur. Our figures have shown that the number of armed attacks in all three Darfur states has fallen by as much as 70% over the past three years, which has resulted in more displaced people returning to their homes. " Gambari argued.
He said the Doha Document for Peace in Darfur provides a unique opportunity for a new beginning. He described it as having planted " the seeds for an enduring peace and paves the way forward for a better future for all Darfuris. Gambari argued, adding that since the signing of the agreement, UNAMID has been working closely with the parties on the implementation of the DDPD.
Professor Gambari said he believed that giving the people of Darfur the security to return to their homes and opportunities to build livelihoods would be the best guarantee of enduring peace.
"To this end, I was in Cairo last week, where I met Dr Nabil Al-Arabi, Secretary-General of the League of Arab States. We agreed that UNAMID and the Arab League, working closely with the Government, will jointly develop some 12 model villages, each serving at least 25 000 returnees in Darfur. " he argued.
