17 November, 2014By: Aisha Braima
Khartoum (Sudanow) The Minister for Interior, Gen Ismat Abdul Rahim Zain al-Abdeen, on Monday received the European Union ambassador to the Sudan Tomas Ulicny who briefed the minister on preparations for convening the international conference on combating human trafficking set for next month in Rome, Italy.
The minister has confirmed to the EU official Sudan's keenness to take part in this conference, referring to the efforts exerted by the Sudan to combat this phenomenon, given the fact that Sudan is a transit country and that the international community fully appreciates the role played by the Sudan in this area.
Khartoum hosted last October a regional conference on fighting human trafficking and smuggling activities in the Horn of Africa Organized by the African Union (AU) in collaboration with the Government of the Sudan, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and the International Organization for Migration (IOM).Experts from 28 countries, including experts from the (EU), United Nations agencies and representatives of the Horn of African countries in addition to partners from foreign countries and organizations participated in the 4-day conference where they focused on the discussion of the phenomenon and on the prospects of cooperation among the states of the region in addressing issues and challenges of human trafficking and smuggling of immigrants.
Dr. Olawale Maiyegun, Director of the Social Affairs of the African Union Commission, explained in an interview to SUDANOW, that substantial progress has been achieved in combatting the phenomenon, as some African countries have enacted some legislations and laws for dealing with migration as a result of a growing awareness of this activity among those countries which elucidate the benefits of migration and, at the same time, for regulate the migration in a way that guarantees the rights of the migrating workers.
He said that the EU pledged cooperation with the AU in laying down the required principles and mechanisms in addition to provision of the appropriate support for addressing the practice.

As for the benefit for such conferences Dr. Maiyegun argued that the crime of human trafficking and illegal migration is a grave crime that jeopardizes the communities and which has spread from the Horn of Africa to several African countries and others beyond the Continent. "This crime is a complicated one because it affects several countries and its eradication calls for rallying efforts by the countries of origin in the Horn of Africa and elsewhere in the Continent as well as the transition and destination countries".
He revealed that the recommendations and resolutions of Khartoum conference which are referred to as Khartoum Declaration will be discussed at Rome international conference where the Foreign ministers of the concerned 28 EU countries, along with the Horn of Africa countries, will meet to discuss the phenomenon.
He added that the EU has promised to offer the Sudan, Egypt, Ethiopia and Eritrea assistance by providing information and arresting the gangs engaged in this activity.
