Chinese Foreign Minister in Sudan: Coordination in International Forums
12 January, 2015By: Aisha Braima
Khartoum (Sudanow)—The Sudan and China have pledged to offer support to each other and to coordinate in the international forums on issues of concern to both of them in a way that enables them to maintain full sovereignty on their territories and serves the interests of the two countries.
This was announced at a joint press conference held by the Sudanese Foreign Minister Ali Ahmed Karti and his Chinese counterpart Wang Yi, who arrived here on Sunday, following official talks between the two chief diplomats.
Karti said the talks dealt with the future relations between their two countries in light of what has already been achieved in the political and economic cooperation. He noted that the bilateral relations stood fast despite the difficulties they faced and the attempts made for impairing them.
The two sides underlined that they would continue coordination and cooperation for achieving peace and stability in the region and in South Sudan, in particular, in support of the efforts currently being exerted by the Inter-governmental Authority on Development (IGAD) in this connexion.
Karti expressed his country's appreciation for the Chinese support to the Sudan on the arrest warrant by the International Criminal Court (ICC) against Preside Omar al-Bashir, besides the issues of Darfur, the Two Areas, South Sudan, Tabit rape allegation and most recently the expulsion of two United Nations officials from Sudan.
He also indicated the Sudan's support to China on the issues of Taiwan, Tibet, the terrorist acts which occurred in some regions of China and the recently raised South China Sea question.
Karti made reference to the remarkable cooperation between the two countries in fields of oil, mining, agriculture and infrastructure, noting that the tremendous Chinese economic support to Sudan has contributed to boosting the economic stability and handling the crisis that followed the secession of South Sudan and loss of a substantial portion of the oil resources.
He revealed the existence of continued consultation between the two countries through joint committees on a number of strategic spheres, including a Sudanese technical committee in China that follows up increasing and expansion of petroleum investments.
The Chinese Foreign Minister said at the press conference that the two-day visit he is paying in response to an official invitation is aimed at backing the Sudan, indicating that the commitment by the two countries with mutual support comes in the framework of achieving the common interests, maintenance of the international, peace, security and justice as well as the legitimate rights of all developing countries.
Wang expressed his country's appreciation to the Sudan's support to China on its vital causes and stressed a persistent Chinese support to the Sudan in maintenance of its sovereignty, territorial integrity, national dialogue and general elections. He said he is confident that the Sudanese parties are capable of surmounting their political challenges and resolving their difficulties peacefully.
The Chinese Foreign Minister appreciated the positive proposals made by the Sudan with regard to petroleum and other fields, noting that the Sudan possesses huge inherent resources of all sorts.
He said China is keen in backing the Sudan for realization of stability in the region, particularly in South Sudan through a continued support to IGAD. Wang said his country is interested in backing stability in South Sudan and finding genuine peace between all parties there, remarking that instability in the South would bring about negative impacts first for South Sudan, then for Sudan and then for China.
The two ministers are scheduled to take part Monday in a consultative meeting with warring South Sudanese parties, the Ethiopian Foreign Minister and a representative of IGAD on the conflict in South Sudan.
