Literature, Journalism Miss Creative Writer

Khartoum (Sudanow) The worlds of literature, translation, journalism and linguistics over the weekend missed renowned Sudanese writer, Dr. Yousif Noor Awad , who died in Doha, Qatar.

The late Awad had enriched the Sudanese Library with a lot of publications in literary criticism and translation which are taught in universities in this region and the World at large. He had left behind an enormous heritage in university lecturing, journalism, translation, poetry and novel writing.

A PhD holder in Arabic literature, the late Awad lectured at the Islamic University of Omdurman, the al-Neelain University in Khartoum, King Abdul-Aziz and Um-al- Qura universities in Saudi Arabia, Sokoto University in Nigeria, Sanford University in the U.K and chaired the Arabic Department in the university of Novaskocia.

His publications include: critical outlook of Taha Hussain’s literature, Islamic constituents of Arabic culture, development of literary criticism in Arabic literature, the narrative science and the theory of translation, the benefit of poetry and the benefit of criticism (a translation), history of Arab theatre (a translation), Shakespeare’s Mid Summer Night’s Dream (a translation), the sea stays calm (a novel), death in lost time ( a novel), Zagalona al-Barakati (a novel), the villager (a novel), a cultural perspective of the phenomenon of backwardness ( a study), a society without schools (a translated study) and a man in a crowded city (a novel).

Media –wise, Awad was one of the founders of Sudan TV in the early 1960s. He also contributed a lot to the national radio (Radio Omdurman). His famous programme “From the Lecture Room to the Microphone‘’ had hosted many university professors and was very beneficial to the audience. In the national TV he is remembered for his programme “The World of Thought”.

He also worked for the BBC Arabic Section and had noteworthy contributions to some other British media outlets.

In an obituary, Al-Jazeera Manager Yasir Abu Hilala extolled Awad’s determination and diligence as a news translator and writer in the channel despite his old age: ”Awad was an outstanding feature of the newsroom and had continued to be so until the last days of his life,’’ said Abu Hilala.

“The Al-Jazeera takes pride in this magnificent writer who, despite his old age and the ailment that kept him in a wheel-chair, had continued to do his job in the best manner,’’ added Abu Hilala.

“Awad had a luminous soul that filled the place with joy and love of life’’ said Abu Hilala, adding that “ we in the Al-Jazeera had missed a splendid journalistic figure who passes leaving for us his heritage …. knowledge and sweet soul that will continue to persist in the newsroom".

Awad is survived by his wife Afkar Mohamed al-Hassan and two daughters.
