Sudan Produces 73.3 Tons of Gold

Khartoum (Sudanow) – With 73.3 tons of gold produced last year, Sudan has climbed the ladder of gold producing countries, to the 12th position globally.
Minister for Minerals Dr. Mohamed Sadiq Al-Karori, has stated at the end of a field tour to River Nile State mining companies Wednesday, that the majority of the produced gold, i.e. 63.3 tons, was actually the yield of work by traditional miners, against 10 tons dug by established companies.
The Minister said the purpose of his tour was to be briefed on the status of both sectors in the fields, urging them to activate work in the production of minerals in general and gold in particular, which, he stressed represents a main resource in the public coffer.
Al-Karori announced in previous statements that the country has earned $1,362,800,000 from gold exports last year.
The traditional gold mining sector absorbs about 5 million miners, as well as providers of other services related to traditional gold mining. Focus on minerals sector intensified as a result of the economic crisis that followed the secession of South Sudan in 2011 and loss of the petroleum proceeds that used to bring over 50% of the national income.
