Al-Bashir Returns Home from South Africa
15 June, 2015KHARTOUM (SUDANOW)- President of the Republic, Omar al-Bashir returned home Monday after leading Sudan delegation that participated in the 25th ordinary African Union summit meeting in Johannesburg, South Africa.
He was received at Khartoum Air Port by First Vice-President, Lt Gen. Bakri Hassan Salih and a number of government officials.
News reports said a South African court on Sunday issued a temporary ban on President al-Bashir leaving the country pending a formal request on his arrest from the International Criminal Court (ICC).
But The Minister of Foreign Affairs Professor Ibrahim Ghandour, who has been accompanying al-Bashir, has stressed Sunday that attempt of the ICC to lure the South African government against President al-Bashir have failed. He has pointed out in a statement to the Sudan News agency on the sideline of the summit meeting that the participation of the President in the summit meeting was an ordinary participation and that the president has never abstained from any African Union summit meeting. He said the president received an official invitation from his South African counterpart and accepted the invitation assuring that the president would continue his participation in the summit meetings and then departs on the schedule set for his departure.
Kamal Ismail, the state minister for Foreign Affairs and the acting Minister of Foreign Affairs, told media men Sunday that what was going on in the media about president Bashir being told to stay pending a court rule “has nothing to do with the reality on the ground there where south African government has declared its commitment and that the president is welcome in South Africa.”
He said it was true that the South African government is signatory of the Rome statute but it is equally committed to the decision of the African Union, adopted last January, not to deal with the ICC.
