US Immigrant Visa Processing Resumed in Sudan

KHARTOUM (SUDANOW) --The U.S. Embassy in Khartoum has announced the resumption of Immigrant Visa processing in Sudan for the first time in nearly 20 years.
The Embassy said in press release it issued Wednesday that "starting in July 2015, applicants for all categories of Immigrant Visas, including Immediate Relatives (IR) Non-Preference Family, Fiance's (K visas) and Diversity Visa Lottery winners will be able to interview and process their visas in Khartoum".
In the past 20 years residents of Sudan have been required to travel to the U.S. Embassy in Cairo to process their Immigrant Visas, which entailed a great deal of time, expense, and effort.
Relations between the two countries were almost severed since 1993. Washington imposed sanctions on Khartoum and lowered its diplomatic representation in the country over alleged sponsorship of terrorism and war crimes in Darfur as well as continuation of conflict in the Blue Nile and South Kordofan region.
Khartoum has tried, in vain, to normalize relations with Washington. But last February the American Administration extended a visit invitation to Ibrahim Ghandour, then Assistant of the President, who was the first Sudanese official to visit the USA for more than two decades.
Recently a popular delegation consisting of tribal leaders and society prominent figures paid a visit to Washington in a bid to handle the matter on a popular level.
