Sudan Exports 34,000 Tons of Gum Arabic
23 July, 2015KHARTOUM (SUDANOW) - Sudan’s gum-Arabic export in the first half of the current fiscal year has reached about 34,000 tons bringing in approximately $50million to the national coffer.
According to the Secretary General of the Sudan Gum Arabic Council, Dr Abdul Magid Abdul Gadir, 23 tons of this produce is of talha (acacia seyal) type while the remainder was from acacia Senegal (hashab).
He attributed the increase of talha gum exports to many factors the most important of which was the European and American demand increase for the Sudanese product at the expense of areas that witnessed Ebola outbreak, and where political instability remains the norm, namely in West Africa.
Abdul Majid said he expects a steady increase in exports, to the tune of more than 60,000 tons by the end of this year.
Gum Arabic is the dried exudate produced from the trunk and branches of the aforementioned two types of acacia trees. It is used mainly in food - confectionery- , pharmaceuticals and industry (printing).
The major quantity of gum Arabic which enters international trade originates in the so-called gum belt of Sub-Saharan Africa, extending from the northern parts of West Africa eastwards to Sudan and Ethiopia. A small amount is produced in India.
The international Gum Arabic production and trade has been dominated by Sudan, producing a whopping 80% of the global share, second comes Nigeria.
