Nine People Died of Sunstroke, Including Five Women, in Northern Sudan
13 August, 2015 KHARTOUM (SUDANOW) – At least nine people, including five women, died of sunstroke in northern Sudan where temperatures ranged between 47 to 48 DC in the shade.
The Minister of Health, Bahar Idris Abugarda, said the deaths were a result of heat stroke.
Speaking at a press conference he held Thursday, the minister excluded meningitis disease as a cause of the deaths because immunization doses were applied nationwide for the people under the age of 30 year and that health units in all the states of Sudan have reported no case to the ministry.
Abugarda said his ministry has sent a medical team to Wadi Halfa to follow up the situation and take the necessary measures.
The Sudan News Agency reporting from Wadi Halfa, northern Sudan state, near the borders with Egypt, quoted a health report as saying that those who died suffered from high fever, dehydration, entered into a coma and passed away, showing no symptom of meningitis.
The heat wave in the city has prompted local authorities to close down schools for at least a week and cut down work-day hours.
Wadi Halfa is neighbouring Egypt where death by sunstroke is reported to have reached 76 on Thursday.
