KHARTOUM (SUDANOW) – A workshop organized by the Committee of Intelligence and Security Services in Africa (CISSA) on cyber crimes kicked off Sunday at Coral Hotel in Khartoum in the presence of representatives of over 40 African countries and IT experts.
The Minister for information Ahmed Bilal Osman, representative of the Presidency, addressed the opening session, calling for bringing together African efforts for conducting studies and exchanging expertise to combat the threats of the cyber crime and the “devils” who exploit electronic progress in plotting against the society and individuals.
Director of the Sudanese National Security and Intelligence Service (NISS) Lt. General Mohamed Atta al-Mula explained that the workshop was one of the specialized workshops which CISSA organized regularly to identify visions and ideas suitable for confronting the challenges and threats posed by the terrorists against the continent.
He stressed the need for enactment of legislations to deter terrorism, citing Sudan’s experience in drafting laws to combat cyber crimes.
The rapporteur of the workshop’s steering committee Col. Tariq Shukri said a number of scientific papers tackling the causes, definition and ways of combating cyberspace crime were being reviewed by the workshop that continues till 11 of current November.
He said representatives from the African Union (AU), AU’s Peace and Security Council and Early Warning Unit in addition to some specialized research centers are taking part in the event.
He further explained that each country would present its experience including examples of crimes committed on its soil and how it combated them.
CISSA was established on 26 August 2004 in Abuja, Nigeria by Heads of Intelligence and Security Services of Africa. CISSA’s raison d’etre is to assist the African Union and all its institutions to effectively address the seemingly intractable security challenges confronting Africa. It was also conceived as mechanism of dialogue, study, analysis, consulting, concerting, and adopting common strategies towards common security challenges among Intelligence and Security institutions in Africa.
