Negotiations on Two Areas Begin in Addis Ababa

ADDIS ABABA (SUDANOW)— The Sudanese government and SPLM_North resumed Thursday evening negotiations on the issue of South Kordofan and Blue Nile areas under the auspices of the African Union High-Level Implementation Panel (AUHIP) for Sudan.
The government delegation is headed by the Assistant of the President of the Republic, Engineer Ibrahim Mahmoud Hamid, while the movement's delegation is headed by Yasser Arman.
The opening sitting of the negotiation was addressed by the AUHIP chief Thabo Mbeki who expressed his appreciation of the steps adopted by Sudan government on declaration of cease-fire for two months and general amnesty for the rebels to participate in the national dialogue.
Hamid said at the opening sitting of the talks that the two parties would discuss cessation of hostilities that would lead directly to a full cease-fire, political and security arrangements and how to deliver relief to the needy citizens in the two areas and end their suffering.
He said the government delegation is entering the negotiation, the 10th round, with honesty, good will and seriousness to achieve an agreement which is not only confines to cessation of hostilities, but also extends to include agreement on comprehensive cease-fire and stoppage of the war, stressing that the current atmosphere is convenient for achieving this goal.
He thanked the AU mechanism and the Ethiopian government for sponsoring and hosting the current and former negotiation sessions on the two areas.
Meanwhile, AUHIP held a separate meeting in Addis Ababa with the government delegation for the negotiations on crease-fire in Darfur, which is chaired by Dr. Amin Hassan Omer, and the delegation of Darfur movements.
The Sudan News Agency (SUNA) reported that the AU mechanism has handed heads of the delegations written proposals to study them and provide their visions in these proposals on Thursday evening or on Friday morning
Omer indicated that the negotiations on Darfur track will be resumed at Doha forum after they reach agreement on cessation of hostilities.
