Sudanese Government Confirms Meeting with SPLM-N in Berlin
17 January, 2016By: Aisha Braima
KHARTOUM (SUDANOW) – The National Dialogue's Higher Coordination Committee (7+7) confirmed that it would hold a meeting with the Sudan People Liberation Movement –North Sector (SPLM-N) during the coming two days in Berlin under German sponsorship.
Member of the mechanism cum Minister of Information Dr. Ahmed Bilal Osman said in press statements on Sunday that he expected the upcoming meeting to be a turning point and breakthrough in the series of talks with the North Sector. "If we reach an agreement the sector would join the ongoing National Dialogue" he added.
Germany has earlier hosted informal talks between the two parties.
The Minister didn't give specific date for the meeting but the African Union has announced last Friday that the talks would resume in the German capital Berlin on 22 January.
The latest round of talks last December between the Sudanese government and the SPLM-N in Addis Ababa has failed to reach agreement on security, humanitarian and political arrangements.
Osman also said another meeting would be held within the coming days with the leaders of Sudan Liberation Movement (Minni Minawe) and the Justice and Equality Movement (Jibril Ibrahim) in Addis Ababa. The meeting will be based on the provisions of Doha Document for Peace in Darfur which was signed between the Sudanese government and the Liberation and Justice Movement in 2011, he said.
Representatives of the Qatari government held a meeting last week with the two rebel leaders in the French capital Paris in which they discussed solutions for the conflict in Darfur. The African Union High-level Implementation Panel (AUHIP) had requested the Qatari government to hold this meeting.
