Sudanese Poet Shortlisted for British "Ted Hughes Award"
01 April, 2016KHARTOUM (SUDANOW) - The Sudanese poet Al-Saddiq Al-Raddi has been shortlisted for the prestigious British Ted Hughes Award for New Work in Poetry 2015.
The £5,000 prize has gone to David Morley for his selected poems, The Invisible Gift, as it was announced Thursday night (yesterday) in London.
Al-Raddi has been shortlisted for his poems " He Tells Tales of Meroe" along with Sarah Maguire who has translated his work from Arabic to English.
"He Tells Tales of Meroe has been written by Al-Raddi whilst he was poet-in-residence at the Petrie Museum of Egyptian Archaeology at University College London. The collection presents eight new poems in Arabic and English which were inspired by the museum’s collection of material from Meroe in Sudan. The poems are accompanied by photographs of the objects that inspired them, and recordings of the poems in both languages are also available as part of the project" a press release by the Award judges said.
Al-Raddi was born in Omdurman-Khartoum State- in January 1969. He has published a number of poetry books. He has worked as cultural editor in a number of Sudanese newspapers and participated in many cultural events abroad. He introduced his poems at many cities in Britain within arts and poetry festivals and took part in a number of poetry translation workshops there.
The poet has won the Sudanese youth poets' top prize in 1986.
