Khartoum State First Environmental Conference Kicks off
12 March, 2016KHARTOUM (SUDANOW) - An international conference seeking to rally support for building a green belt around Khartoum, Sudan’s
national capital, kicked off here on Saturday with representatives of at least 40 countries participating according to organizers.
The conference known as the First Environmental Conference on Green Belt is to assess the impact of the various environmental challenges that faces Khartoum including the sand dunes that make it a dusty town, pollution, utilization of renewable energy sources and funding for environmental projects.
Addressing the opening session Assistant of the President of the Republic, Brig. Abdul-Rahman Al-Saddiq Al-Mahdi, pointed out that the climate changes have become a challenge facing the whole world .
He has called on the developed countries to honour their pledges to help the developing and the less developing countries combat the increasing negative impacts of the climate change.
The governor of Khartoum state, Abdul Rahim Mohamed Hussein, said his government intends to strictly observe environment pollution measures, getting rid of solid wastes and recycling them for production of energy .
He said by hosting this conference the Sudan is opening new horizon of regional and bilateral cooperation between the participating states as well as UN and donor countries experts, in the fields of environment .
The conference which will continue for three days will discuss scientific papers on the various environmental effects of the belt,
studying subsistence programmers and projects proposed to help the local population on how they would help preserve the belt and at the same time reap the benefits, inkling digging wells and creating gardens and green areas that would attract people spend time and
money.
