Government Delegation to the Peace Negotiations Returns Home
15 August, 2016By: Aisha Braima
KHARTOUM (Sudanow.info.sd) - The Sudanese government delegation to the peace talks in Addis Ababa returned to Khartoum Monday after the failure of the talks on the Two Areas (South Kordofan and the Blue Nile) and Darfur to reach an agreement on cessation of hostilities.
The Head of the government delegation, Assistant of the President Ibrahim Mahmoud, explained in a press conference at Khartoum airport that the government delegation joined the talks armed with strong political will and determination to go forward with the process of peace and the National Dialogue. "Because of this motive we have signed the road map a few months ago" he added.
But, he stressed, it was very clear for the government delegation that the SPLM-N and Darfur armed movements came to Ethiopia only to sign the road map with the aim to ease the international and regional pressures on them, but not out of genuine intention for reaching peace or for implementing the road map.
He said this was evident from the press conference held by Yassir Arman, the SPLM-N Secretary-General, in which he spurred many problems and criticism before the completion of the talks with the aim of poisoning the atmosphere of the peace talks and making it non-conducive for the negotiation.
Mahmoud said the SPLM-N movement has also put forwards illogical option for the delivery of humanitarian assistance to the two areas out of Lokichokio in Kenya, Juba in South Sudan and Assosa of Ethiopia. "Their aim is to only prolong the war as they did in the past in South Sudan through what was known as Operation Lifeline Sudan" he added.
He said these unrealistic preconditions aimed to break off the talks.
He said the government delegation had proposed that humanitarian assistance be transported out of Kadugli, South Kordufan state, and Damzain, Blue Nile state, as they remain the closest to the affected people in the Two Areas.
He said the rebel movement have rejected this option on the ground that they do not trust the government side.
He said the movements delegation has reiterated earlier that there were only three items that need to be settled in the negotiation session, but they surprised the government delegation by more than 13 new points which showed they had no desire to reach a peaceful solution.
Mahmoud said the government of Sudan would continue its efforts to reach peace and would never give up hope. He said his message to the Sudanese people is that those rebels do not wish to reach peace in the country nor see it enjoy stability.
He said the government of Sudan affirms its desire and readiness to respond to any invitation by the African Union High Level Implementation Panel for resumption of these talks.
He added that for the government delegation there was no reason to prevent signing of a ceasefire but it was clear that the rebels were seeking to use the humanitarian relief assistance delivery as a political tool or a cover up for military supplies.
He said those rebel movements do not care about the suffering of the people in the two regions adding that what they want it to trade with the lives of the civilians there.
