China to Grow Cotton on one Million Feddan in Sudan
25 August, 2016KHARTOUM (Sudanow.info.sd) – A Chinese delegation led by the Agricultural Minister will arrive here on September to sign agreement for cultivating an area of one million feddan (404685.64224 hectares) with cotton in central Sudan’s Gezira Scheme and other areas.
Minister of Agriculture Prof. Ibrahim al-Dihkairi explained, in a meeting with the Gezira State‘s Government Council, on Thursday that the Chinese project was being implemented according to two cooperation agreements which Sudan signed with China on the sidelines of the Forum on China–Africa Cooperation summit, held in Johannesburg, South Africa, December 2015.
He said the project aims at boosting the national economy through upgrading the transformative industry in the fields of spinning, textile and clothes manufacturing.
Al-Dikhairi said the project is targeting the reestablishment of cotton cultivation in the national agricultural schemes particularly the Gezira Scheme which has been known worldwide for its long staple
cotton production (It was established by the British colonizers to furnish the British textile industry). Therefore, the bulk of the project area would be in the Gezira Scheme while the rest will be in other states of the Sudan, he added.
He said the Chinese delegation consisted of 50 firms, financial institutions and businesses. In addition to the signing of the cotton-related contract, his ministry aims to attract more Chinese investments during the four-day visit, he added.
The Gezira State‘s Government Council, headed by the Deputy Governor Dr. Imad Eddeen al-Jack, welcomed the Chinese project describing it as consistent with both the State plan on supporting the national strategic projects and the Sudanese government programmes for reviving the Gezira Scheme, improving the citizens living conditions and resolving the producers problems.
He stressed the necessity to harness all capabilities of the state for successful implementation of the Project.
