Army says it attacked new Darfur rebel Alliance in south Darfur

Khartoum, (Sudanow) - The Sudanese army said it has attacked a new alliance of Darfur rebel groups, killing tens, seizing equipment and injuring countless of them in South Darfur state, Western Sudan, a few kilometers from the 1956 borderlines that separate the south from the north.
Army spokesman captain Khalid Al Sawarmy said the Sudanese armed forces evening Friday attacked positions of the alliance of the Justice and Equality Movement and the Sudan Liberation Movement – Min Faction-in Shangil Tobay area inflicting heavy material and human losses on them.
“The rebel losses included forty dead and huge number of injured” the spokesman was quoted by the official Sudan news agency as saying early morning Saturday.
The army has meanwhile said it sustained three dead and thirteen of its troops were injured in the fighting which was still going on with the army chasing remnants of the rebels, according to the agency
The army said a prominent rebel leader, Mohamed Osman Janjaweed; a military commander with the Justice and Equality Movement was killed in the battle.
The army spokesman said this battle was the first against an alliance of JEM and SLA –Mini faction, that was formed south of the borders of 1956 and which entered south Darfur region.
The spokesman said the base of these forces was still stationed in Bahr Gazal State of southern Sudan.
The army, according to the statement carried by the agency, is in full control of the situation in Darfur.
