Qatar has pledged to provide half a billion dollars to help rehabilitate war- fatigued Darfur
08 April, 2013Khartoum, Sudan (Sudanow)- The Arab Gulf State of Qatar has pledged to provide half a billion US dollars for the rehabilitation of War-fatigued region of Darfur of western Sudan, out of the total sum of 7.5 billion estimated to bring the area out of its current state of misery.
A two day conference, under the patronage of the Emir of Qatar, Sheikh Hamad Bin Khalifa Al-Thani, and which brought over forty governments and international organizations , is currently in session to discuss ways to help the region amass 7.5 billion dollars needed to rehabilitate the region and construct badly needed basic services, water, education and development projects.
The rehabilitation is south to stave off frictions among the various ethnic groups by providing water, services and compensating the losses incurred during 10 years of civil strife.
Reporting from the Qatari capital of Doha, the official SUNA news Agency said Qatar has also set aside one billion dollars for the establishment of The Darfur Development Bank. Paper works and construction of the edifice in the region was already underway, since 2010.
The Qatari pledge was announced by the Qatari State Minister for Cabinet affairs, Ahmed Bin Abdallah Al-Mahmud.
The second session of the conference which is devoted to lure donors, also saw an announcement by the German government which committed to pay 60 million Euros for the same while United Kingdom has pledged to provide 16.5 million dollars for three year, to help build the capacity of Darfurians in agriculture and husbandry domains.
